In Plastic Surgery and specifically Cosmetic Surgery, it is the quality of the residual scar that makes the difference between an excellent or merely mediocre outcome of a surgical procedure. Therefore, all surgeons working in this field are concerned about the final quality of scars and we are always trying to improve them.
Through experience, it is known that both the care in the surgeon’s surgical technique and each patient’s scarring characteristics are the only factors that determine the quality of scars.
Numerous experimental and clinical studies show the importance of the total amount of factors released by fibroblasts in both the scar’s active phase and its maturation process. Collagen is the most determinant protein.
High concentrations of collagen, together with calcium and vitamin C, in the centre of the wound facilitate fast healing, particularly of the skin. The faster the first phase ends, the earlier the scar’s maturation phase can begin. This will make it more conspicuous.
This is why I have been using BIOCOL as an additional post-operative exogenous supply for the last four years.
This product, due to its high collagen concentration, is ideal for achieving the beneficial effect I want for my patients.
In Cosmetic Surgery we are known for the quality of our scars. Hence the importance of obtaining the best possible residual scar.
In recent years, the routine post-operative use of BIOCOL after breast reductions and abdominal dermolipectomies has allowed us to considerably reduce the percentage of surgical revisions of diastasic and hypertrophic scars, which were previously necessary to obtain a better scar quality, with the consequent discomfort this entailed for the patients.
Therefore, I recommend the application of BIOCOL to all patients undergoing dermolipectomy or breast reduction from day 6 following the operation and for a duration of at least six months, applied once or twice a day throughout the scar by means of a gentle massage, until the product is completely absorbed.
I am sure that this experience, which our patients benefit from, may be used by other surgeons, thus achieving greater post-operative comfort and a faster and better final result.
